Kenny G is to divorce his wife after 20-years of marriage.

Kenny Gorelick, 56, married Balynda Helene Benson-Gorelick in 1992. The pair were together until January, when People Magazine reported that Benson-Gorelick filed for the couple’s legal separation while also seeking full custody of their 14-year-old son Noah, alongside child support payments.

The case for separation was never heard in January; however, according to court documents obtained by celebrity tabloid website E!, Kenny G has filed for a formal divorce from his estranged wife last week, citing irreconcilable differences.

The recent filing sees a much more amicable split between the couple, with joint custody of their son. A pre-nuptual agreement is also being upheld, which appears to be of importance as Kenny G is worth an estimated $50 Million.

Gorelick will be represented by Laura Wasser, who has previously represented a number of high-profile celebrities, including Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Kenny G’s music has been a point of contention among Jazz critics. Speaking to JazzOasis, guitarist Pat Metheny explained why many musicians and ‘serious’ listeners appear of hate him:

“This controversy seems to be largely fueled by the fact that he sells an enormous amount of records while not being anywhere near a really great player in relation to the standards that have been set on his instrument over the past sixty or seventy years. And honestly, there is no small amount of envy involved from musicians who see one of their fellow players doing so well financially, especially when so many of them are far superior as improvisers…”

Having said that, there’s no doubting the fact Kenny G serves as a model the the commercial potential of Jazz in the modern era.
