A brand new image of André Benjamin (better known as André 3000, of OutKast fame) as Jimi Hendrix has been unveiled.

Benjamin plays the highly influential guitarist in an upcoming biopic about his life, ‘All Is By My Side.’

Uniquely, the film eschews the legend of a rock god known for blazing instrumentation, both figuratively and literally, and tells the story of a musician just trying to make it on the streets of London. In a rarely told story that is seminal to rock music’s evolution, ‘All Is By My Side’ aims to capture the surprisingly quiet man behind the wailing guitar, chronicling a defining year as he went from New York City backing musician James Marshall Hendrix to rock god Jimi Hendrix in London between 1966 and 1967.

“We did not want to do a Vegas lounge-act impersonation of Jimi Hendrix,” the film’s writer-director John Ridley said. Ridley is best known as the oscar-winning screenwriter behind 12 Years a Slave. “He understood the beauty in being observant, and (Benjamin) actually does that. Thoughtful and introspective, and then an extrovert the moment he has a guitar in his hand.”

The publishers that own Hendrix’s music have refused to allow Ridley to use any of Hendrix’s original music. However, the film is still expected to feature some of his well-known cover songs, including “Hey Joe,” and “All Along The Watchtower.”

Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, and Ruth Negga also star in the film, which is set to hit theaters June 13, 2014 in the US and August 8 in the UK.
