I have been wondering what an ‘appropriate’ first video would be to post to this site, and while I’m sure majority of people reading this will be familiar with jazz on some level, I feel that the first video should be something that provides an introduction to the history of jazz.
I believe that a jazz musician cannot move forward musically until they understand the history of the genre; and a great introduction to this history is ‘Jazz, by Ken Burns’. While the criticisms of this film are well documented, no other film/documentary comes close to matching the depth that this film attains in its analysis of the ‘roots’ of this art-form.
